ACT NOW: World Language Advancement and Readiness Grant Funds (WLARA) Must Be Included in Final FY26 Defense Bill
With the federal government reopening, Congress is turning its attention to passing the remaining funding bills, including the Fiscal Year 2026 Department of Defense’s Appropriations bill. Over the past five years, the Department of Defense has provided approximately $79 billion for the World Language Advancement and Readiness Grants (WLARA) program, which supports multi-year grants for innovative world language programs at military-connected schools and DODEA schools. To date, 33 public school districts, spread across 19 states have received WLARA grants. Languages represented by the awards include: ASL, French, German, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish.
This year, WLARA’s funds are in jeopardy. While the House-approved FY26 Department of Defense funding bill would provide $15 million for WLARA, the Senate Appropriations’ Committee’s version includes no funding for it. If the Senate version wins out, the WLARA program will come to an end.
The Senate is preparing to act on its version of FY26 Department of Defense funding in the next 10 days. The House may also act soon. The House and Senate will then negotiate and vote on a final bill.
Now is the time that we must press Congress to invest in the only federal K-12 language education program that helps protect our nation’s national security and defense. Please urge your members of Congress to support $15 million for WLARA in the final FY26 Department of Defense Appropriations bill.
