This year we will resume the VIDEO FLES contest for schools that are 100 miles outside of Atlanta. Registration will begin March 1.
Schools inside 100 miles will participate in an IN-PERSON contest. It will be held on Saturday, April 15th at the Amana Academy. More information will be available at the end of January.

It is time to get ready for the FLAG SPOKEN LANGUAGE CONTESTS!

Dearest Georgia World Language Teachers,

The first 2023 FLAG Spoken Language Contest is scheduled (weather permitting) to be held in:

Savannah, GA

on 

Saturday February 11 at Islands High School.

The address is 170 Whitmarsh Island Dr, Savannah 31410.

The second 2023 FLAG Spoken Language Contest is scheduled (weather permitting) to be held in:

Lawrenceville, GA

on

Saturday, February 25 at Mountain View HS.

The address is 2351 Sunny Hill Rd, Lawrenceville 30043

Only FLAG members may register students for this event. Parents may not register their children for the event unless they are FLAG members.

Member dues must be paid in full PRIOR to registration.

 (Membership)

Students in 6th-12th grade are invited to participate. Schools are restricted to 10 students per language/level.
     i.e. All Spanish I teachers from one school are limited to 10 Spanish I students total.
Registrars are required to serve as judges if there are 10 or more registrants per school. Judges can be anyone familiar with language level expectations. It is preferred that teachers do not judge their own students.


There will be a $5 fee per student to compete.


Competitors will receive certificates FOLLOWING the contest to allow teachers to proof names of registrants as well as to allow substitutions.
All judges will receive an honorarium.

Additional languages may be considered based on interest and judge availability.

Nota Bene: Schools will be charged based on the number of registrants regardless of
"no show" status.

Registration for both contests will open on Thursday January 5.
Registration for the Savannah contest will close on February 5th at 11:59pm.
Registration for the Lawrenceville contest will close on February 19th at 11:59pm.. These are hard deadlines.

Fulton County Spanish Teacher Receives SCOLT Leadership Award

Ms. Tavane Moore of Sandtown Middle School in Fulton County was honored with the SCOLT Leadership Award at the annual conference in March 2021. The SCOLT Leadership Award is given for K-12 educators who have demonstrated excellence in language teaching through service to the school and community, active participation in SCOLT, and leadership and advocacy at the local, state, regional and/or national level. Ms. Moore was chosen from a wide field of nominees from across the region because of her dedication to her long-time career as a Spanish teacher, her ongoing advocacy of world languages opportunities for her students, and her long history of presenting at state, regional and national conferences. One of Ms. Moore’s references indicated Ms. Moore is, without question, one of the most outstanding teachers and facilitators I have witnessed in my nineteen years of teaching. FLAG congratulates Ms. Moore and thanks her for her many years of membership and service to FLAG!

Gwinnett County Latin Teacher Receives National Recognition

            The Foreign Language Association of Georgia wishes to congratulate Miriam Patrick, a Latin Teacher at Parkview High School, who recently was named the 2021 recipient of the Charles Humphreys Award. The American Classical League established this award in memory of Charles Humphreys to recognize excellence in teaching Classics and Classical Languages. Recipients should exemplify qualities which Charles himself brought to teaching and the profession, namely a “sparkling enthusiasm for scholarship, education, and the Humanities.” Ms. Patrick was recognized for her innovative teaching practices, including interdisciplinary instruction and authentic, real life learning opportunities for all students. Please join us in congratulating Miriam Patrick on this outstanding achievement.
