Tax Exempt Guidance for Hotel Stay

 

As an employee of a school, your hotel stay may be eligible for tax-exempt status if paid by state or local government funds. To receive this tax exemption, there are TWO forms that you are required to obtain from your school/district and provide to the hotel upon check-in. The hotel can only accept the original, signed version of the form. These two forms: the State of Georgia Sales Tax Form and the Local Hotel Tax Form along with a required form of payment on a government-issued (i.e., school district-issued) credit card or check will exempt the guest from all taxes, except for the $5.00 per day Georgia Tourism Fee. 

 

It should be noted that FLAG is unable to provide or sign these two forms and it is the sole responsibility of the attendee to obtain the requisite forms for tax exemption. 

 

 

Forms of Payment:

To be tax exempt from both state and local taxes,  your hotel room charges must be paid by state or local government funds, this could be in the form of a check (school/school system check) or government credit card.   

If you pay by personal credit or debit cards, you would be exempt from only the local hotel tax.

Ms. Tavane Moore of Sandtown Middle School in Fulton County was honored with the SCOLT Leadership Award at the annual conference in March 2021. The SCOLT Leadership Award is given for K-12 educators who have demonstrated excellence in language teaching through service to the school and community, active participation in SCOLT, and leadership and advocacy at the local, state, regional and/or national level. Ms. Moore was chosen from a wide field of nominees from across the region because of her dedication to her long-time career as a Spanish teacher, her ongoing advocacy of world languages opportunities for her students, and her long history of presenting at state, regional and national conferences. One of Ms. Moore’s references indicated Ms. Moore is, without question, one of the most outstanding teachers and facilitators I have witnessed in my nineteen years of teaching. FLAG congratulates Ms. Moore and thanks her for her many years of membership and service to FLAG!

Gwinnett County Latin Teacher Receives National Recognition

            The Foreign Language Association of Georgia wishes to congratulate Miriam Patrick, a Latin Teacher at Parkview High School, who recently was named the 2021 recipient of the Charles Humphreys Award. The American Classical League established this award in memory of Charles Humphreys to recognize excellence in teaching Classics and Classical Languages. Recipients should exemplify qualities which Charles himself brought to teaching and the profession, namely a “sparkling enthusiasm for scholarship, education, and the Humanities.” Ms. Patrick was recognized for her innovative teaching practices, including interdisciplinary instruction and authentic, real life learning opportunities for all students. Please join us in congratulating Miriam Patrick on this outstanding achievement.

Dr. Kelly Davidson has a B.A. from Furman University, an M.A. from Vanderbilt University, and a Ph.D. from Emory University. Currently, she is an Associate Professor of French and World Language Education at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, GA.

In her recommenders’ words:

“Dr. Davidson goes well beyond the classroom in that she is a tireless advocate for French in schools and all languages at the primary levels. This is her passion and her spirit; she loves spreading the joy of FLES. Similarly, she combines her research interests, such as equity and teaching as community, into her practical teaching.”

generations of language instructors as well as her passionate advocacy for early language
